Authorities say a dispute inside a Baldwin County home continued into neighboring yards as the injured parents tried to escape.

DAPHNE, Ala. — A 17-year-old boy has been charged as an adult with murder and attempted murder after authorities say he stabbed both of his parents, killing his mother and leaving his father seriously injured during a violent confrontation that spread from their home into nearby yards.

Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly before 9 p.m. July 5 to a reported assault on Augustine Drive in the Belforest community near Daphne. They found 37-year-old Samantha Baker and her husband, 46-year-old Lance Baker, suffering from apparent stab wounds. Deputies and emergency workers attempted to help them, but Samantha Baker was pronounced dead at the scene. Lance Baker was airlifted to a hospital. Authorities detained the couple’s teenage son at the property and charged him with one count each of murder and attempted murder.

Investigators believe the confrontation began inside the family’s home before Samantha and Lance Baker tried to get away, according to Capt. Justin Correa of the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. The violence then moved outside, leaving investigators with a scene that stretched beyond the home and into the surrounding street and yards. Officials described the case as an isolated domestic incident and said they had found no broader threat to residents. They have not released a full account of what occurred inside the house or explained the exact sequence of each injury.

Authorities said an argument involving parental discipline preceded the attack. They have not disclosed what discipline was imposed, how long the dispute lasted or whether anyone else witnessed its beginning. Sheriff’s officials have also avoided releasing many details while detectives interview witnesses, review recordings and process physical evidence gathered from the home and neighboring properties.

Neighbor Shawn Scurry said her home-security system recorded part of the incident after it moved outdoors. According to Scurry, the recording captured Lance Baker calling for help while moving from house to house. She said he appeared to be searching for an unlocked door or someone who could assist him. His pleas continued through the neighborhood as he left marks on several doors, she said. “The hardest part was pulling up my camera and listening to it and listening to the father yelling for help: ‘Please help me. I don’t want to die,’” Scurry told WALA-TV.

Scurry said the recording and the scene outside her home showed how far the confrontation had traveled before law enforcement arrived. “And he’s going house to house, hand prints, there’s blood on them all,” she told AL.com. Her account has become one of the most detailed public descriptions of the minutes before deputies reached Augustine Drive. Authorities have confirmed that Lance Baker ran toward neighboring homes seeking help, but they have not released the surveillance recording or a complete transcript of its audio.

Investigators said the teenager returned to or remained inside the family home after the stabbings. He locked himself in a bedroom and called 911 before deputies took him into custody, according to reports citing sheriff’s officials. No additional confrontation with responding officers was reported. Authorities have not released the full emergency call, and it is unclear what the teenager told the dispatcher beyond reports that he acknowledged a serious dispute and injuries involving his parents.

The sheriff’s office initially withheld the teenager’s name because he is 17. Both Samantha and Lance Baker had military backgrounds, according to published accounts. Lance Baker was described as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army Reserve, while Samantha Baker reportedly served six years in the Army National Guard and worked as a real estate agent. The couple had two teenage sons. Reports said their younger son was not at home when the confrontation occurred. Authorities have not discussed where he was or whether investigators interviewed him, and news organizations have generally avoided identifying him because he is a minor who is not accused of wrongdoing.

Some reports have cited social-media posts and a neighbor’s interpretation of an earlier family argument.
