LONG BEACH, Calif. – A 34-year-old man has been charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old girl who was gunned down just steps from her home, police said Friday.
Troy Lamar Fox, who was already in Los Angeles County Jail on unrelated charges, was transferred to Long Beach City Jail to face charges of murder and attempted murder. He is accused of killing Briana Soto and opening fire on four others in two separate incidents.
Briana had just finished a phone call with her mother when she was shot on March 26. Responding officers found her at the intersection of 11th Street and Lewis Avenue at around 8:26 p.m. She was rushed to the hospital by Long Beach Fire Department personnel in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries after several days, according to police.
“Briana Soto’s tragic death at such a young age has profoundly affected her family and our department,” Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish said. “Our detectives, officers, and professional staff have worked tirelessly utilizing all resources to identify and apprehend the suspect responsible for this heinous crime.”
Investigators released surveillance footage in April, hoping to identify the suspect, who they initially believed had no prior interaction with Soto. Meanwhile, just days after the incident, Fox allegedly fired at four people, including three juveniles, on April 9. Officers responded to a ‘shots fired’ call on Pine Avenue, linking him to the crime.
Adding to his charges, authorities responded to another incident on July 7 involving firearms found inside a vehicle on 14th Street and Pine Avenue. Fox, along with a juvenile, who were both prohibited from owning guns, were found in possession of multiple firearms, police said.
