MESA, AZ – A 22-year-old man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he killed his 4-week-old daughter, who died from extensive blunt force injuries sustained at their apartment in Mesa.

Jonathan Enriquez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse after police responded to an emergency call about a non-breathing infant on July 11. The incident occurred at an apartment complex on East Covina Street, located approximately 20 miles east of downtown Phoenix.

According to police, Enriquez was alone with the newborn when she stopped breathing. First responders arrived at the apartment around 9 a.m. after being informed that the baby had allegedly choked while being fed. Emergency personnel found the infant girl unresponsive and immediately began life-saving efforts before rushing her to a nearby hospital, authorities said.

Medical staff admitted the child in critical condition. Examinations revealed the baby had suffered multiple serious injuries, including a fractured skull, brain swelling, a broken leg and ribs, and bruising at various stages of healing. The nature of the injuries raised immediate concerns among medical professionals and law enforcement.

Investigators spoke with both parents and documented inconsistent explanations for the injuries. Initial accounts from Enriquez and the child’s mother suggested their daughter choked or had fallen from a bed. However, further questioning led Enriquez to admit he had handled the infant forcefully while changing her and suggested alternate causes for the injuries, including falls from a car seat and being struck by a seatbelt buckle.

A forensic analysis of Enriquez’s phone revealed a message sent to the baby’s mother shortly before the 911 call. In the message, Enriquez asked her to return home quickly, admitting, “I messed up.”

Doctors described the baby’s injuries as catastrophic. The medical examiner’s autopsy reported that the trauma was consistent with violent actions such as slamming, crushing, or stomping, rather than accidental injury.

Investigators said Enriquez eventually confessed to striking his daughter in frustration when she would not stop crying. Authorities said he expressed deep remorse while detailing his actions to detectives.

The infant remained hospitalized for more than two weeks but did not recover. She was pronounced dead on July 26 as a result of her injuries, according to police.

Enriquez was taken into custody and booked into Maricopa County Jail. His bond is set at $1 million.
