MIAMI, FL – A Miami man was arrested after authorities say he fatally shot his wife’s lover during a confrontation in a shopping center parking lot, following years of tension over an alleged affair.

Omar Rene Aguila, 69, faces charges of second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm after an altercation at the Northside Shopping Center turned deadly on July 12.

Investigators say that trouble began years earlier, when Aguila’s wife began a relationship with the victim in 2019. According to law enforcement, Aguila discovered the ongoing affair this past April and demanded it end. Tensions reportedly escalated in the days leading up to the shooting, including a confrontation when the victim visited Aguila’s home two days prior to the shooting.

Police reports indicate that the fatal incident unfolded as Aguila accompanied his wife and son to the flea market at the Northside Shopping Center. The victim, who was not named by authorities, arrived to deliver food to a friend and then attempted to speak with Aguila’s wife.

Shortly after, Aguila approached the victim’s vehicle and the two men exchanged heated words, authorities said. During the argument, Aguila allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the victim multiple times. Investigators say surveillance footage captured the incident, providing critical evidence in the case.

Paramedics responded within minutes and rushed the wounded man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The name of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of relatives.

At first, Aguila was permitted to leave the scene after asserting he had acted in self-defense and that the victim possessed a weapon in his vehicle. However, detectives later reported no evidence of a firearm in the victim’s possession, contradicting Aguila’s claim.

Further scrutiny revealed that Aguila is a convicted felon, legally barred from owning or carrying a firearm. This discovery resulted in an additional charge of felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities arrested Aguila on Thursday. He remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he is being held without bond ahead of a court appearance scheduled for Monday.

Officials have yet to disclose further details on the ongoing investigation. Court records do not indicate if Aguila has retained an attorney.
