HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – An 82-year-old woman is facing murder charges following the deadly shooting of her husband inside a Hilton Head assisted living facility, authorities said.

Law enforcement officers were called Friday morning to the Preston Health Center on the island after receiving reports of a gunshot. When deputies arrived at approximately 10:30 a.m., they discovered Dennis Recker, 81, gravely wounded in one of the facility’s private rooms. His wife, Harriett Kay Recker, was found at the scene with him.

Medical responders urgently worked to assist Dennis Recker, but he died from his injuries soon after the shooting. His identity was officially confirmed by the Beaufort County Coroner on Monday, after notifying his family.

Investigators have so far not released any information on what might have led to the shooting. They did not say whether Dennis or Harriett was the resident of the care facility, which provides various types of medical and memory-related support for older adults.

Authorities have stated that there is no longer any immediate danger posed to others at the residence, emphasizing that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident.

Harriett Recker was detained and taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where she remains without bond, according to jail records. She faces charges of murder as well as possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Court documents indicate Harriett Recker was expected to appear before a judge on Monday. No plea has yet been entered, and attorneys for Harriett Recker have not made public comments.

The Preston Health Center, where the incident took place, offers both long-term and short-term care for seniors, with special services for those dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
