Academic Ueda Nominated as Japan’s Next Central Bank Governor, Despite Gender Equality Blow

The Japanese government has nominated Kazuo Ueda, an academic from the University of Tokyo, to serve as the next governor of the Bank of Japan.

Ueda is expected to take a more pragmatic approach to the central bank’s policies than his predecessor, Haruhiko Kuroda, who served for eight years. This is according to Monex’s chief economist, Takuji Koll.

The nomination of Ueda has been met with criticism due to the lack of gender diversity among the Bank of Japan’s leadership. The current board is all-male, and Ueda’s nomination continues this trend.

Ueda has served as a professor of monetary and financial economics at the University of Tokyo since 1987. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago, and a research fellow at the Bank of Japan.

Ueda is expected to take office in April. He will be the first governor in nearly a decade to have no experience in the private sector.
