Airline Fees Skyrocketing: Air Canada to Charge Carry-On Baggage Fees Starting January

Toronto, Canada – Airline passengers in Canada are facing a new wave of fees as Air Canada announces additional charges for carry-on baggage starting in January. This move comes as the cost of checked baggage continues to climb, impacting travelers opting for basic economy fares within the Americas.

Under the new policy, budget-friendly passengers will incur a $25 fee for their first piece of carry-on luggage, which includes roller bags and oversized backpacks. A $36 charge will apply for a second piece of carry-on baggage. If travelers do not pay in advance, they will face a steep $46 surcharge at the airport.

The decision by Air Canada to introduce these extra fees aims to align its fare structure with other Canadian carriers, although it has faced criticism from Canadian lawmakers. Federal Transport Minister Anita Anand expressed dissatisfaction with the airline’s move, questioning the targeting of passengers with these additional charges.

In addition to the carry-on fees, Air Canada will also charge low-fare flyers for changing seats assigned at check-in starting on January 21. This policy change has previously sparked strong backlash from customers, adding to the scrutiny faced by the airline over its new fee structure.

The introduction of carry-on fees by Air Canada follows a trend among budget carriers, including Frontier Airlines in the United States, which has implemented similar charges. Despite criticism, Frontier’s CEO Barry Biffle defended the policy, describing passengers who avoid fees as “shoplifters” and emphasizing the importance of upholding rules for all travelers.

The airline industry’s shift towards imposing additional charges for carry-on baggage reflects a broader strategy to generate revenue amid increasing competition and fluctuating demand. Travelers should be prepared for these changing fee structures as airlines navigate the challenges of a post-pandemic travel landscape.
