A flight from New York City to New Delhi, India, was diverted to Rome over the Caspian Sea on Sunday due to a security concern. The American Airlines flight, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, landed in Rome after the airline deemed the security issue “non-credible.”
Upon landing at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome, the aircraft was inspected by law enforcement and cleared for departure. The FCO airport spokesperson mentioned that it was capable of handling such incidents without providing specific details on the reason for the change in flight plans.
Italian military fighter jets escorted the plane upon its arrival in Rome, ensuring the safety and security of all passengers and crew. Despite the visible presence of fire trucks on the landing strip, there were no reported injuries, and the airport continued to operate normally.
Passenger Neeraj Chopra described the tense moments onboard when the captain announced the need to turn back due to a change in security status. The decision to divert the flight to Rome caused concern among passengers, especially when fighter jets were assigned to escort their plane.
The flight, which had departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport, was en route to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Following the diversion to Rome, passengers were informed that the aircraft would remain overnight to give the crew necessary rest before continuing the journey to India on Monday.
American Airlines expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to customers, emphasizing that safety and security are their top priorities. As the investigation into the security concern continues, passengers await further updates on their delayed journey to Delhi.
