Arizona man calls 911 before his stepson shoots him

PEORIA, AZ – A 25-year-old man is in custody after his stepfather was shot and killed inside their Peoria home late Sunday night, police said.

Authorities responded to a residence on Hatfield Road, near 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road, following a report around 10 p.m. of a domestic disturbance involving threats with a firearm. The initial 911 call came from the victim, 64-year-old Casey Orlowski, who told dispatchers his stepson, Zachary Parker, had repeatedly pointed a gun at him and his wife. Orlowski said he had barricaded himself in a bedroom and was uncertain about the location of his wife and Parker.

Moments later, police received a second emergency call. This time, Parker’s mother reported she had managed to run from the house to a neighbor’s residence for help. Officers arrived on scene shortly after, hearing multiple gunshots from inside the home as they attempted to gain entry. Efforts to break in were hindered by a reinforced metal security door.

Authorities said Parker then called 911, telling dispatchers his mother was dying and accusing his stepfather of being a cartel member plotting to kill him. Officers remained outside until Parker exited the house with his hands raised, reportedly telling them he “did what he needed to do.”

Parker was taken into custody without further incident. Investigators entered the home and discovered Orlowski dead from gunshot wounds inside the bedroom. Detectives believe Parker fired his weapon through the locked bedroom door, fatally striking Orlowski.

According to court records, Parker is facing charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault. The documents also highlighted a reported history of mental health challenges and access to firearms by the suspect.

During his initial court appearance, Parker told the judge he had acted in self-defense, claiming his stepfather was the aggressor during the confrontation.

Parker is currently being held in Maricopa County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing as police gather additional evidence and statements from those involved.
