Provo, Utah — The suspect in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk made an appearance in court Monday, concealing his face during the proceedings. Tyler Robinson, 22, did not enter a plea and sought a postponement for his waiver hearing, which is an option available in Utah’s legal system for individuals charged with crimes.
Robinson’s legal team, led by defense attorney Kathryn Nester, communicated with state prosecutors before Fourth District Judge Tony Graf. Although Robinson was expected to participate via video, he was not present. Nester indicated to the judge that she would not waive the preliminary hearing, where prosecutors are required to present sufficient evidence to substantiate their charges.
Nester expressed the necessity for additional time to review the evidence, which prosecutors described as extensive. This delay could potentially extend the proceedings for months. Prosecutors have charged Robinson with aggravated murder and are pursuing the death penalty options.
The hearing took place near the Utah Valley University campus, a location still grappling with the aftermath of Kirk’s death. Authorities reported that after Kirk was shot dead on September 10, a significant manhunt ensued, culminating in Robinson’s arrest at a sheriff’s office over three hours away from the crime scene.
Evidence presented by prosecutors reportedly includes incriminating texts and DNA samples linking Robinson to the incident. Notably, a message Robinson allegedly left for his partner hinted at his intention to target Kirk, expressing distress over what he described as the activist’s hateful rhetoric.
Robinson has remained in custody at the Utah County jail in Spanish Fork since his arrest. Kirk, a prominent figure among young conservative voters and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, was described as a “martyr” by Trump, who has called for a crackdown on what he labels the radical left.
In the wake of Kirk’s killing, prominent Republicans have vowed to continue his mission of advancing conservative values. Upcoming campus events associated with Kirk have been rescheduled, with various political figures, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Senator Mike Lee, stepping in as speakers.
Robinson’s next court hearing is scheduled for October 30, where he is expected to appear in person.
