CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Authorities have charged a Macomb County man with involuntary manslaughter and vulnerable adult abuse after his elderly father was found dead from dehydration last fall. Michael Stirling, 51, was arraigned Wednesday in district court, accused of failing to provide proper care for his bedridden father, James Stirling, 77.

Prosecutors allege that Stirling, who was acting as his father’s live-in caretaker, did not ensure the elder had access to adequate hydration, leading to his death. The official ruling from the county medical examiner stated that James Stirling died of dehydration, and the manner of death was listed as homicide.

The circumstances leading up to the discovery began on November 3, 2024, when a neighbor reported seeing Michael Stirling outside his home on Nicke Street, appearing confused and disoriented. Responding officers assisted Stirling and, upon entering the residence, conducted a welfare check. Inside, they discovered the body of the elderly man.

Initial accounts Stirling provided to police varied, according to investigators. He first stated he had seen his father the previous day, but later changed his story, claiming he last saw his father on October 30 and had arranged for someone else to look after him. Authorities were unable to locate the individual Stirling referenced, and the contact number he provided was not in service.

The investigation into James Stirling’s death stretched over several months as officials gathered evidence and coordinated with medical authorities. Prosecutors ultimately charged Michael Stirling with involuntary manslaughter, vulnerable adult abuse, and a habitual offender enhancement due to a previous offense.

During the arraignment at 41B District Court, Stirling was ordered held on a $250,000 bond, which would apply if he is released from a local mental health facility where he was transferred following court proceedings. Jail records do not show that Stirling is currently housed at the Macomb County Jail.
