LANCASTER, CA – Authorities are investigating the suspected murder of a 33-year-old woman whose body was found in the Angeles National Forest, as her husband remains at large in Peru, believed to have fled the country with their three sons.

Sheylla Cabrera was first reported missing on August 12, but investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department believe she had been killed several days earlier. Surveillance footage from the Cabreras’ apartment building on Lancaster Boulevard revealed unsettling clues, as deputies observed a man matching her husband’s description dragging a large, wrapped object away from their residence during the early hours of August 10.

Deputies attempting to reach Jossimar Cabrera, 36, at the family’s home soon discovered both he and the couple’s three sons—ages 9, 6, and 4—were missing. Investigators immediately suspected foul play in Sheylla Cabrera’s disappearance and launched a homicide investigation.

Detectives learned Jossimar Cabrera, a Peruvian national like his wife, had already left the United States with the children. Authorities began collaborating with law enforcement agencies in Mexico and Peru to track his whereabouts and secure the boys’ safety.

Additional evidence prompted a multi-agency search in the Angeles National Forest. On August 13, search and rescue teams combed the area, and after three days, responders located an object over the edge of an embankment resembling what was seen in the surveillance video. Upon closer inspection, deputies discovered Sheylla Cabrera’s body inside the material.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any weapon was used or detailed the condition of her remains.

Meanwhile, Peruvian authorities informed their counterparts in Los Angeles that the three children had been found unharmed and placed in protective custody. The children are now reportedly staying with their maternal grandmother in Peru.

Despite the international search, Jossimar Cabrera has not been charged in connection with his wife’s death as of Tuesday. He was briefly detained by Peruvian police but subsequently released due to the absence of formal charges in the United States.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced that the case would soon be presented to local prosecutors, seeking murder charges against Jossimar Cabrera and initiating procedures to request his extradition from Peru.

According to Sheylla Cabrera’s mother, her daughter previously reported domestic violence involving her husband during their time in Peru. In their last conversation, Sheylla reportedly indicated plans to file a complaint in California, although the length of the family’s stay in the U.S. remains unclear.

During the course of the investigation, Jossimar Cabrera has allegedly provided conflicting accounts regarding his wife’s disappearance, at times claiming she had been taken by immigration authorities, left with another man, or suffered a fatal accident.

On Tuesday, friends and neighbors gathered at the family’s Lancaster apartment to mourn Sheylla Cabrera’s death and honor her memory. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue efforts to bring her husband back to the United States to face potential charges.
