CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht has stepped down from his position, ending a brief and tumultuous tenure. According to The New York Times, Licht’s departure came after a chaotic run at the cable news network.
CNN anchors had reportedly voiced their concern over Licht’s leadership, with Business Insider reporting that they were worried about his handling of the network. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Licht’s bosses at CNN’s parent company, WarnerMedia, had been critical of his performance.
Licht became CNN’s chairman and CEO in January 2021, but his tenure was marked by controversy from the start. He faced criticism over his handling of sensitive stories, and some CNN employees complained about his management style.
In a statement, Licht said that his decision to step down was “mutually agreed upon with WarnerMedia.” He added that he was proud of the work he had done at CNN and that he believed the network was in good hands under its new leadership.
CNN has not yet announced who will replace Licht as its chairman and CEO. In the meantime, the network said that it would continue to provide “unbiased, fact-based reporting” to its viewers.
