Boston, Massachusetts – Residents in Massachusetts have a rare opportunity to witness a “naked-eye” comet in the night sky over the next few days. Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is set to reach its perihelion on Friday, marking its closest approach to the sun in its 80,000-year orbit. This event is expected to make the comet bright enough to be visible without the aid of binoculars or telescopes from Friday through Monday of next week.
To catch a glimpse of the comet, individuals will need to wake up early and have a clear view of the east-southeastern horizon with clear skies. The comet will appear just a few degrees above the horizon and will only be visible for less than an hour before sunrise.
While viewing comets can be challenging due to the unpredictability of their brightness, astronomers are optimistic that the comet’s large, dusty tail should be visible. However, after Monday, observers in the northern hemisphere may not be able to see the comet for several days until it re-emerges low in the western horizon around October 12 for additional viewing.
2024 has been an exceptional year for stargazing, with notable events such as a total solar eclipse, a partial lunar eclipse, spectacular auroral displays, and meteor showers. This comet sighting adds to the astronomical excitement, offering enthusiasts the chance to check another celestial event off their bucket list.
Astronomy enthusiasts and casual stargazers alike are encouraged to take advantage of the favorable viewing conditions this weekend with clear skies forecasted from Friday through Monday. Updates on viewing opportunities will be provided throughout the weekend and ahead of the next window later in October. As always, individuals are encouraged to share their comet sightings by sending pictures to weather@wbztv.com.
In the world of astronomy, each celestial event brings its own sense of wonder and awe, connecting people to the vastness of the universe and igniting a sense of curiosity about the cosmos. Whether admiring a comet streaking across the sky or gazing at distant galaxies through a telescope, the beauty of the night sky continues to captivate and inspire individuals to look up and wonder about the mysteries of the universe.
