Liverpool, England — A serious incident during a celebratory parade in Liverpool has led to criminal charges against a 53-year-old man, following a collision that injured 79 people, including a child. Paul Doyle, a local businessman and former Royal Marine, faces multiple counts involving grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving after allegedly driving his vehicle into a crowd on Water Street.
The incidents occurred shortly after 6 p.m. BST on Monday when a vehicle struck supporters gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s Premier League victory. Following his arrest, Doyle was charged with several serious offences, which include two counts of wounding a child with intent and two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm. He is set to appear before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court.
According to authorities, seven victims remain hospitalized, with injuries that range across various age groups, from a nine-year-old to an elderly individual of 78. The local police, led by Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims, are conducting a thorough investigation, reviewing extensive CCTV footage and witness statements as part of the case. “We are committed to finding out what happened and seeking justice for every victim,” Sims stated at a news conference.
Neighbors of Doyle expressed their shock and disbelief over the incident. Many reported seeing a heavy police presence in the area after the crash. One resident noted the unusual activity, speculating about the suspect’s possible involvement after observing the police’s search throughout the neighborhood.
The nature of the charges against Doyle has raised questions about the circumstances of the collision. The allegations include both causing serious bodily harm and attempting to do so, critical distinctions that are being closely evaluated by investigators.
In a statement, Chief Crown Prosecutor Sarah Hammond emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation. “We are gathering evidence from various sources, including CCTV, mobile devices, and witness accounts,” she said. “This material will help us ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”
As the investigation unfolds, police have indicated that the charges may evolve. They seek to ensure justice is served for all affected individuals. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we work tirelessly to get to the bottom of this incident,” Sims added.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a jubilant event for the Liverpool community, highlighting the need for vigilance and safety during large celebrations.
Doyle’s initial court appearance is awaited with significant public interest, and it’s expected that further developments will emerge as the investigation progresses.
