Dallas, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys have finalized a trade deal to bring quarterback Joe Milton to their team as a backup for Dak Prescott. In the exchange, the New England Patriots will receive a fifth-round pick along with a seventh-round pick.
Reports revealed that the Patriots had been approached by multiple teams inquiring about Milton’s availability, but it was Dallas’ offer that ultimately sealed the deal. Milton, a sixth-round pick from Tennessee in 2024, showed promise during the preseason and had a notable performance in his one regular-season appearance.
During a Week 18 game against Buffalo, Milton demonstrated his skills by completing 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards, scoring a touchdown, and rushing for 16 yards with another touchdown while losing one fumble. These standout moments likely caught the attention of the Cowboys, who were in need of a reliable backup after Cooper Rush’s departure to Baltimore.
It is worth noting that Trey Lance is also on the Cowboys’ roster but remains a free agent. In addition to Milton, Dallas also has Will Grier as another quarterback option. On the other hand, the Patriots have solidified their quarterback lineup by signing Joshua Dobbs to a two-year deal to support Drake Maye.
The acquisition of Milton by the Cowboys adds depth to their quarterback lineup and provides insurance in case Prescott faces any unforeseen setbacks. As for the Patriots, the trade allows them to secure valuable draft picks while ensuring their roster remains competitive for the upcoming season. This move signifies the ongoing strategy and adjustments made by NFL teams as they gear up for another challenging season on the field.
