DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Keith Eric Jones of Des Moines, Iowa has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for his involvement in a drag-racing crash that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old boy.
In November, a jury found Jones guilty of several charges including homicide by vehicle, operating under the influence, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. The sentencing took place on Thursday, with Jones being held accountable for his actions.
The tragic incident occurred on December 13, 2022, when Jones and another man, Robert Lee Miller III, were reportedly racing on a four-lane road after drinking at a bar. It was stated that Miller’s car reached a speed of 108 mph before crossing over a median and colliding with another vehicle, in which 4-year-old Marcos Faguada and his aunt were passengers. Marcos sadly passed away at a hospital due to the injuries sustained in the crash.
During Jones’ sentencing, Marcos’ mother expressed the grief and pain caused by the loss of her son, emphasizing the impact it has had on her life.
In addition to the prison sentence, Jones has been ordered to pay $150,000 to Marcos’ family as part of the judgment.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless and irresponsible behavior on the road, ultimately resulting in the loss of a young life. Justice has been served in this case, but the emotional and physical repercussions of this incident will continue to affect the victims and their families for years to come.
