PORTLAND, Ore. — Kevin Durant achieved a significant milestone on Friday night, overtaking Wilt Chamberlain to claim the seventh spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. The star forward reached this landmark during a matchup between the Houston Rockets and the Portland Trail Blazers when he sank a three-pointer in the third quarter.
Entering the game needing just 15 points to surpass Chamberlain’s historic total of 31,419 points, Durant’s shot with 7:57 remaining in the quarter brought his career total to 31,422 points. This achievement puts him within striking distance of Dirk Nowitzki, who is sixth with 31,560 points.
At 37 years old and in his 18th NBA season, Durant continues to impress as a 15-time All-Star, further adding to his career statistics as he eclipsed 8,000 rebounds in the same game. His remarkable journey through the league highlights both his scoring prowess and longevity.
Rockets coach Ime Udoka expressed admiration for Durant’s work ethic, emphasizing that his ability to excel at this level does not come as a surprise. “When you see the work ethic and what he does on a day-to-day basis, it’s clear why he reaches these milestones,” Udoka said before the game.
Tiago Splitter, the Blazers’ coach, reflected on Durant’s early career, recalling his dominance with the Oklahoma City Thunder. “Even back then, he was putting up 30 points every night. It’s astounding that he continues to perform at this level,” Splitter said. He acknowledged the impressive nature of Durant’s sustained excellence, especially as he nears the twilight of his career.
As fans at the Moda Center learned of Durant’s achievement, they erupted in applause, showing their respect and appreciation for the veteran athlete’s contributions to the game. Splitter offered a warm embrace to Durant during the celebratory moment, highlighting the camaraderie within the league.
Durant’s ascension on the scoring list not only adds to his personal accolades but also cements his legacy as one of the game’s greats, drawing comparisons to legends who have preceded him. His journey continues to inspire both fans and fellow players, reflecting the hard work and dedication that have defined his career.
