Istanbul, Turkey – An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Istanbul and surrounding areas, causing panic and injuries among the city’s 16 million residents. Despite the widespread fear, there were no immediate reports of significant damage from the quake, which had its epicenter in the Sea of Marmara, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Istanbul.
The earthquake, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, was felt in neighboring provinces as well, including Tekirdag, Yalova, Bursa, and Balikesir. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya mentioned that the main quake lasted for 13 seconds and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks, the most powerful one measuring 5.9.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, more than 150 people were hospitalized due to injuries sustained while trying to escape buildings. Many residents fled to parks, school yards, and open spaces to seek safety and avoid potential collapses. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed gratitude that the situation did not worsen, urging for protection from future calamities and disasters.
Residents shared their experiences of the quake, with some mentioning the intense shaking and moments of fear. Despite the lack of collapsed buildings, concerns about the city’s vulnerability to earthquakes remain high. Urban reconstruction projects have been initiated to fortify at-risk buildings and prevent extensive damage in the event of another quake.
Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, expressed sadness at not being able to be with the city’s residents during the quake due to being jailed on corruption charges. The arrest of Imamoglu, considered a key rival to Erdogan, has raised questions about political motivations. As residents prepare for potential future earthquakes, some have considered leaving Istanbul for safer locations.
As the city remains on edge following the earthquake, authorities have reported no collapsed buildings but have noted damage in certain areas. Schools in Istanbul have been closed for safety reasons, and residents have been advised to stay vigilant in the face of potential aftershocks. Stay tuned for further updates on the situation in Istanbul and efforts to ensure the city’s preparedness for future seismic events.
