WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump hosted a festive White House Easter egg roll on Monday, welcoming tens of thousands of attendees. With overcast skies offering relief from the sun, Trump expressed gratitude to the National Park Service for the event’s arrangement. The President, alongside First Lady Melania Trump and an Easter bunny mascot, extended Easter greetings to the crowd.
More than 40,000 people were anticipated to take part in the festivities, including several of Trump’s grandchildren. The event featured various activities, including a race where children used wooden spoons to guide colorfully dyed eggs across the lawn. In addition to the traditional egg roll, participants engaged in activities celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of America’s founding.
A highlight of the egg roll was a special station where attendees could sign a mini-Declaration of Independence or dress up as the Founding Fathers. Trump made sure to acknowledge the efforts of his wife, Melania, for organizing the event and the National Park Service for their meticulous work in preparation. The American Egg Board, a long-time participant in the egg roll, donated 30,000 hand-dyed eggs to the celebration.
Emily Metz, the board’s president and CEO, emphasized the significance of celebrating Easter traditions despite challenges in the egg market. The donation of small and medium-sized eggs to the White House aimed to avoid further strain on the supply chain and soaring prices. Metz highlighted the importance of real eggs in Easter celebrations and noted the daily consumption of eggs in the U.S.
In his address at the event, Trump touched on various topics beyond Easter, such as recruitment efforts in the military and law enforcement. He also mentioned a resurgence of religion in America. The White House Easter egg roll, a tradition dating back to 1878 during Rutherford B. Hayes’ presidency, remains an enduring event for families.
Tickets for the event were distributed through a lottery, ensuring a diverse crowd could participate in this cherished tradition. The day featured numerous activity stations, live performances, and storytelling sessions, making it a memorable and joyous occasion for all in attendance. As the event concluded, attendees departed with smiles, having enjoyed a day of fun and celebration at the White House.
