Actor, comedian and Law & Order: SVU star Richard Belzer has passed away at the age of 78.

The Independent reported that Belzer, who was known for his role as Detective John Munch, died on Sunday. Belzer was one of the longest-running cast members on the show, having appeared in over 300 episodes in various spin-offs.

Fox News reported that Belzer was also known for his roles in the show Homicide: Life on the Street and in the movie The Bonfire of the Vanities.

The Baltimore Banner paid tribute to Belzer by writing that he was “smartass supreme” and that his roles were “both comedic and dramatic”.

CNN reported that Belzer had a “long and varied career” and that he was a “beloved figure in the entertainment industry”.
