FARGO, ND – Authorities have charged a Fargo woman with attempted murder after she allegedly attacked her boyfriend with a hatchet as he slept in a garage on the city’s north side, officials said.

According to local law enforcement, officers responded to a report of an assault on the morning of September 5 near the 700 block of College Street North, where three people experiencing homelessness had been staying. Investigators allege that Lena Deoliveira, 23, used a hatchet to strike her boyfriend, Jonathan Granados, multiple times while he was asleep.

A man who had been sheltering alongside the couple in the detached garage told police he was awakened by Granados’s screams. Moments later, he reported witnessing Deoliveira swinging the hatchet down, creating a sound similar to wood being split, according to court documents.

The witness told authorities he could not see precisely where the blows landed due to limited visibility, but said it was immediately clear that Granados was severely hurt. Police records state that the witness saw significant injuries to Granados’s head and hands, with portions of his fingers appearing mutilated.

Officers at the scene discovered evidence consistent with a violent assault, detecting blood stains and signs of a struggle. Paramedics transported Granados to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for deep lacerations to his scalp and hands. Medical officials described one of his head wounds as a “large slice,” according to charging documents.

Deoliveira had fled the scene prior to police arrival but was apprehended later that day in nearby Moorhead. Authorities said her arrest proceeded without incident.

Court records indicate Deoliveira faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault in Cass County. She was booked into jail, and her bail was set at $500,000.

According to authorities, the alleged attack unfolded inside the garage where all three individuals had been living amid unstable housing circumstances. Police did not disclose a possible motive for the attack.

Deoliveira is scheduled to appear in court on October 16 for her next hearing. No additional details about her legal representation have been released.

Granados’s current medical condition has not been made public, but officials said he survived the attack. The investigation remains ongoing.
