MIAMI, FL – A person suspected of shooting a worker at a Miami residential building and setting fire to the complex has been taken into custody, officials confirmed. The fire broke out at the Temple Court Apartments around 8:15 a.m. local time, requiring more than 125 firefighters to battle the flames for approximately eight hours, shared Miami Mayor Francis Suarez during a press briefing.
Firefighters conducted multiple daring rescues, saving over 40 individuals, some of whom were stranded on their balconies. Mayor Suarez praised the firefighters’ efforts as “heroic” and highlighted their swift action in response to the emergency. The intense blaze led to an explosion after the evacuation process, marking the city’s first three-alarm fire in 25 years.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered a man with a gunshot wound inside the building, who was promptly transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The victim, an employee of the complex, was identified by the property’s management company, Atlantic Housing Foundation, expressing shock and sadness over the devastating incident. While the shooting appears to be isolated, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover more details.
Despite the chaos, all residents of the building, primarily elderly individuals, have been successfully located and are safe. Authorities have yet to release any information regarding the suspect involved in the incident. The fire, which originated on the third floor of the wooden structure, spread rapidly due to the building’s construction material, explained Miami Fire-Rescue spokesperson Lt. Pete Sanchez.
Following the incident, three firefighters were transported to a local hospital for evaluation, with two already discharged as of Monday afternoon. Another resident was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation. In a show of support, the property management company is arranging temporary accommodations for the 43 displaced residents, seeking to ensure their well-being during this challenging time.
As investigations continue to determine the cause of the fire and the events leading up to it, Atlantic Housing Foundation remains committed to assisting authorities in any way possible. The community is rallying together in the aftermath of this tragedy, emphasizing the importance of emergency preparedness and swift action in ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
