LOS ANGELES — HBO’s forthcoming “Harry Potter” television series has unveiled the first six actors slated to star in the show, set to premiere in 2026. This adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels promises to offer a deeper dive into the enchanting world of wizards than the original film series did.
Production is scheduled to kick off this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, England. The series aims to stay true to the essence of Rowling’s books, aiming to resonate with fans of the magical universe she created.
Among the first casting announcements are seasoned actor John Lithgow, who will portray the wise and mysterious headmaster of Hogwarts. Lithgow, known for his versatile roles in various projects, takes the baton from Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who both previously embodied the character of Dumbledore in the original film franchise.
Additionally, Janet McTeer will step into the role of the stern yet caring Transfiguration professor McGonagall, previously brought to life by the legendary Maggie Smith. Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost have also been cast to portray key characters in the series, with Frost taking on the lovable half-giant Hagrid, originally portrayed by Robbie Coltrane.
Moreover, Paul Whitehouse will embody the cantankerous Hogwarts caretaker, a role initially played by David Bradley. Emerging talent Luke Thallon rounds out the announced cast, set to portray the timid Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, previously depicted by Ian Hart in the first “Harry Potter” film.
In a bid for inclusivity and diversity, HBO conducted an open casting call in September 2024 for children aged 9 to 11 from the UK and Ireland to audition for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Over 32,000 children tried out for these coveted roles, and filming for their parts is slated to commence in mid-2025.
As production progresses, further casting announcements, including the iconic trio of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, are expected. HBO’s commitment to delivering a detailed adaptation that pays homage to the original books while introducing new elements to engage both existing fans and newcomers sets a promising tone for the upcoming series.
