DES MOINES, IA – Authorities say a Des Moines man already in jail for allegedly attacking his 2-month-old daughter may soon face upgraded charges after the infant died from her injuries.
Dylan James Brown, 23, was arrested on August 7 after emergency responders were called to his home on reports of an unresponsive infant. When Polk County sheriff’s deputies arrived, they discovered the baby girl in medical distress. Investigators allege Brown had repeatedly struck his daughter, resulting in severe trauma. Court documents indicate the child suffered a brain hemorrhage and multiple fractures, with medical professionals detailing evidence of significant force.
Following the incident, the infant was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors reported she had suffered a stroke and was subsequently placed on life support. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that, despite medical intervention, the baby had died as a result of her injuries.
Officials also accuse Brown of assaulting the baby’s mother during the same evening. According to court filings, the woman was awakened by the sound of Brown allegedly hitting their baby. When she attempted to intervene, authorities say Brown struck her in the head and forced her out of the bedroom. The complaint further states that Brown allegedly strangled the woman from behind until she lost consciousness.
Brown was initially charged with child endangerment, domestic abuse, assault impeding air or blood flow, and two counts of willful injury causing serious injury. Prosecutors say those charges could be amended or supplemented in the wake of the baby’s death, as investigators continue to work closely with the Polk County Attorney’s Office.
Since his arrest, Brown has remained in custody at the Polk County Jail. He is being held on $250,000 bond.
Authorities have not released the names or current condition of the other family members involved. The investigation is ongoing, and officials say additional charges against Brown may be forthcoming, pending autopsy findings and further review.
Community members in Des Moines remain shaken by the incident, with local officials urging anyone who witnesses or suspects child abuse to contact authorities immediately.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information related to the case to reach out as investigators continue to gather evidence.
Court records show no attorney listed for Brown at this time. No future hearings have yet been scheduled as of Wednesday.
