Des Moines, Iowa — The Powerball jackpot has surged to an impressive $565 million, marking it as the largest lottery prize of 2025. This substantial increase follows Wednesday night’s drawing, where no tickets matched the drawn numbers: 4, 11, 40, 44, 50, and the Powerball number 4. While the potential windfall captures attention, speculations about how much a winner might actually take home after taxes loom large.
If a winning ticket is drawn in the upcoming drawing, the victor will face a choice: accept the full jackpot paid out in 30 annual installments or select a lump sum cash option of approximately $258.8 million. Although the lump sum is more popular, the tax implications significantly reduce the take-home amount.
Should the winner opt for the one-time payment, federal taxes will immediately diminish their earnings by 24%, leaving roughly $196.7 million. As federal income tax rates can reach as high as 37%, the final amount could be even lower, potentially dropping to about $163 million. In contrast, choosing the installment option could lead to annual payments of around $18.8 million, which, after taxes, may yield around $11.8 million each year.
Residents in different states may be subject to varying tax rates on their winnings. For instance, lottery prizes in New York are taxed at 10.9%, while states like Texas, Florida, and California do not impose taxes on such winnings. Therefore, the ultimate amount a winner receives can vary significantly depending on their state of residence.
The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for Saturday night, presenting an exciting opportunity for hopeful players. Coinciding with this, the Mega Millions lottery will be drawing for a separate jackpot of $198 million the day before.
Interestingly, those aiming for the Powerball prize face daunting odds of 1 in 292.2 million. This stands slightly worse compared to the Mega Millions, whose odds are 1 in 290.4 million. Recent adjustments to the Mega Millions game have improved the chances of hitting both the jackpot and smaller prizes.
This current jackpot eclipses the previous largest Powerball prize of $526.5 million won in California back in March. The year has already seen impressive winnings, with the Mega Millions offering its highest prize of $349 million to a ticket holder in Illinois. Last year, a historic Powerball jackpot of $1.326 billion was claimed by a lucky winner in Oregon.
As the clock ticks toward the next drawing, players across the country remain anxious, hoping to beat the odds and claim what could be a life-changing fortune.
