Justice Demanded in 2005 National Guard Murder Case

NICOSIA, Cyprus – On Saturday, a powerful demonstration took place outside the Legal Service office in Nicosia, where Andriana Nicolaou, the mother of Thanasis Nicolaou, made a heartfelt plea for justice regarding her son’s tragic death while serving in the National Guard in 2005.

During the gathering, Andriana emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law rather than succumbing to injustice. She recounted the harrowing details surrounding her son’s passing, asserting that her family has been tirelessly fighting for justice since that fateful day in September 2005.

After nearly two decades of relentless efforts, it was finally confirmed that Thanasis’s death was not accidental, leading to a renewed investigation by the current government to uncover the truth behind the case. Andriana called for unity among the community to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

She also demanded a constitutional amendment to separate the powers of the attorney-general and appoint an independent official to oversee criminal proceedings, subject to judicial review. Additionally, Andriana urged that Thanasis’s case be handled by new parties to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation process.

In a separate development, President Nikos Christodoulides visited Paphos and affirmed the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind Thanasis’s death. Addressing reporters, he emphasized the importance of allowing investigators to conduct their work diligently without interference.

Christodoulides highlighted the significance of examining events spanning from 2005 to 2024 to determine if any misconduct occurred during that period. He underscored the administration’s dedication to supporting Andriana in her quest for justice and emphasized the need for thorough investigation and accountability in the case.

The demonstration and subsequent government response underscore the deep-seated desire for justice among the community and the government to address past wrongdoings and ensure accountability in cases of suspected foul play. As the investigation progresses, the hope for closure and justice for Thanasis and his family remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds.
