LENEXA, KS – A Johnson County man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to the fatal shootings of his wife and son, and to killing a neighbor’s dog, during a violent outburst last fall.

Todd Donovan, 54, received a “Hard 50” sentence on Tuesday after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of animal cruelty. Under Kansas law, the sentence means Donovan must serve at least 50 years before he can be considered for parole.

Authorities say Donovan’s rampage unfolded on Nov. 1, when Lenexa police were called to his home on Hallet Street for an armed disturbance. Officers arriving just after 8 p.m. heard multiple gunshots coming from the residence. Donovan, armed inside, refused to surrender, prompting a standoff with law enforcement that lasted more than five hours and required support from additional agencies.

Negotiators spent hours trying to coax Donovan out of the house. At one point, according to court records, Donovan emerged briefly, disarmed himself by tossing a rifle from his garage, but then reentered the house to take medication. He eventually ceased communication with officers. When police finally entered the home around 1:50 a.m., Donovan was found inside and was transported to a hospital on suspicion of a drug overdose.

Inside, officers discovered the bodies of Sheila Donovan, 52, and their son, Tyler Donovan, 22. Both had died from gunshot wounds. Police later learned that Donovan had also killed a neighbor’s dog around the same time authorities first arrived.

Investigators pieced together Donovan’s state of mind from the night based on phone calls and recorded conversations. He is reported to have called his brother, Aaron Miller, threatening suicide and confessing to the shootings, saying he believed his wife and son were mocking him as he pretended to sleep.

Additional details from court documents indicated Donovan spoke to crisis negotiators about his “betrayal” by his family, at one point imploring officers to end his life. His communications reportedly stopped after he ingested approximately 30 sleep medications.

The events of the standoff and the subsequent investigation left a lasting impact on the Lenexa community. Authorities have not released further details surrounding Donovan’s motives beyond his own statements the night of the incident.

During court proceedings, the prosecution outlined the timeline of the violence and Donovan’s refusal to surrender, emphasizing the premeditated nature of his actions.

The “Hard 50” sentencing provision, established by the Kansas Legislature, calls for a mandatory 50-year minimum sentence for premeditated first-degree murder, effectively ensuring Donovan will be in prison for decades.

Family and friends have been left mourning Sheila and Tyler Donovan. Obituaries and remembrances described Sheila as a source of joy and unwavering support for her loved ones, noting the special bond she shared with her son. Tyler was remembered for his generosity and willingness to help others.

Donovan remains in custody following his sentencing. There are currently no plans for appeal or request for sentence modification.
