Evanston, Illinois — Michael Schill will step down as president of Northwestern University after a transformative three-year tenure, marked by significant growth across its campuses, record-breaking fundraising achievements, and an upward trajectory in national rankings.

In a message to the university community, Schill expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead during a challenging but pivotal time. He acknowledged the immense progress made in various areas, despite facing obstacles such as a federal research funding freeze. “I believe now is the right time for new leadership to guide Northwestern into its next chapter,” Schill stated, indicating that he reached his decision after discussions with the Board of Trustees.

The Board is expected to appoint an interim president soon, with Schill remaining in office until the transition is complete. He will then take a sabbatical before returning to the faculty of the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, where he plans to engage in teaching and research.

Peter Barris, chair of the Board of Trustees, commended Schill for his unwavering dedication and leadership during a tumultuous period for both Northwestern and higher education as a whole. Since taking office in September 2020, Schill has led Northwestern to its highest-ever ranking at No. 6 in U.S. News & World Report. His tenure also witnessed the university’s successful fundraising efforts, with nearly $2.5 billion raised, including the second- and third-highest fiscal years in fundraising history.

Among Schill’s notable initiatives were the establishment of several academic and research centers that positioned Northwestern as a leader in various scientific fields. His administration launched initiatives like the Pat & Shirley Ryan Family Research Acceleration Fund and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Chicago, which focused on advancing research in critical areas.

Schill also made strides in promoting free expression on campus, launching the Litowitz Center for Enlightened Disagreement and establishing the President’s Advisory Committee on Free Expression. These efforts aimed to foster a climate of open dialogue among students and faculty.

During his presidency, Schill addressed challenges head-on, including controversies surrounding a hazing scandal and campus unrest following international events. His leadership helped implement new policies to protect student athletes and successfully update the university’s stance on antisemitism, resulting in a marked decrease in incidents reported on campus.
