RIVERHEAD, NY – A Long Island teenager stands accused of murdering his grandmother and attempting to kill his mother in a violent outburst over a confiscated laptop, as detailed by Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. Facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and assault, the 15-year-old could spend 15 years to life behind bars if found guilty.
Authorities have withheld the juvenile’s identity due to his age. The incident reportedly began on the evening of April 7 when an argument ensued between the teen and his mother, Vanessa Chendemi, over his truancy from school. The altercation escalated when Concetta Chendemi, his 56-year-old grandmother, sided with Vanessa and urged her to take away the boy’s computer.
In the ensuing chaos, the teenager allegedly armed himself with a knife, first attacking his grandmother with fatal consequences. While his mother, Vanessa, sustained serious injuries, she feigned death to avoid further harm, according to Tierney’s statement.
The assailant allegedly continued the attack on his incapacitated grandmother before fleeing the residence. With the teen gone, Vanessa managed to escape and secure assistance from a passing motorist who facilitated her call to 911. Emergency responders subsequently declared Concetta deceased at the scene, while Vanessa was rushed to a hospital where her recovery is ongoing.
Law enforcement apprehended the young suspect later that night, bringing relief to a community shaken by the violence. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 21.
The district attorney underscored the devastating impact of the incident, labeling it as profoundly tragic. “The consequences of a child turning weapon against his family are soul-deep, resonating with emotional and psychological wounds that surpass even the physical,” Tierney commented. “Our goal is to attain justice for those affected by these appalling actions.”
As the case develops, concerns rise over the mental health ramifications and rehabilitation prospects for juveniles in the justice system, exemplified by the severity and nature of these charges.
The tragic event brings to light the intricate mix of emotions following violent crimes within families, highlighting the necessity for community support systems and the justice system’s role in handling such sensitive cases.
