WEST END, NC – A North Carolina father has been charged in connection with the tragic death of his two-year-old son over a year after the incident occurred. The arrest follows an investigation by the Moore County Sheriff’s Office that revealed harrowing details of the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Aaron Lynwood Carter, 27, was apprehended on Jan. 7, charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse after authorities concluded that his negligence led to the death of his son, River, on Dec. 2, 2023. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Carter left the toddler unattended for more than 12 hours in an overheated room.
First responders were called to a residence in West End—a community located approximately 85 miles east of Charlotte—following reports of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found River deceased, leading to an immediate investigation.
Details on the events that unfolded inside the home remain sparse. However, authorities now assert that Carter’s neglect contributed to a perilous environment for the young child. Investigators allege Carter failed to remove River from a room where a space heater caused the temperature to rise to deadly levels.
