Pregnant Kansas woman tries to leave boyfriend but he shoots her after she ripped Playstation controller out of his hands

WICHITA, KS – A Wichita man has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder after being accused of fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend during an argument at his father’s home late last month, according to court documents.

Authorities allege that Matthew Criscenzo, 20, shot Naomi Oglesby, also 20, after a dispute that began over a video game controller and escalated quickly. Police say the incident took place on May 25 at a residence in the 700 block of South Laura Avenue, where the couple often stayed with Criscenzo’s father.

According to investigators, Criscenzo became upset when Oglesby attempted to leave and grabbed his PlayStation controller. Statements attributed to Criscenzo in law enforcement records indicate he confronted Oglesby with a handgun. In a recorded interview, he described a struggle during which he claims Oglesby tried to push the weapon away before it fired.

Oglesby, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was discovered on the living room floor with a gunshot wound to the head. Criscenzo’s father told authorities he was baking in the kitchen when the fatal shot rang out. He recounted finding his son standing over Oglesby, firearm in hand, before he secured the weapon and called 911.

Emergency medical teams responded swiftly, performing an emergency cesarean to deliver Oglesby’s baby. The newborn, named Zy’nia, survived the delivery but was reported in critical condition, suffering from seizures and significant brain injury attributed to oxygen deprivation before birth. Oglesby was pronounced dead within minutes of the procedure.

Upon police arrival, Criscenzo reportedly made several unsolicited remarks acknowledging responsibility, repeatedly expressing disbelief and remorse over the shooting. He allegedly admitted he acted because he feared Oglesby was leaving him, and continued to voice regret during his ride to the police station and while waiting in the interview room.

Crime scene investigators recovered a spent .40 caliber cartridge in the living room and several rounds of ammunition from the residence. Additional gun-related materials were found in Criscenzo’s bedroom.

A friend of the victim revealed to detectives that an earlier domestic incident had raised concerns, alleging that Criscenzo had assaulted Oglesby while intoxicated and threatened her with a gun about a week before the fatal shooting.

A fundraising campaign was launched online to support Oglesby’s newborn and family, noting the severity of the child’s medical prognosis and honoring Oglesby’s memory.

Criscenzo told police he had been drinking at the time of the incident and initially believed he had only grazed Oglesby. He remains in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 8. In addition to the murder charge, Criscenzo is facing accusations of attempted murder and aggravated battery, according to court filings.
