With the departure of Carr, the team is evaluating three contenders: rookie Tyler Shough, Jake Haener, and Spencer Rattler.

Head Coach Kellen Moore addressed the media on Saturday, emphasizing that all three quarterbacks will have the opportunity to prove themselves during the upcoming preseason. “We’re going to let all three of these guys roll,” Moore stated, noting that each of them has earned the opportunity to compete for the starting role. The Saints’ head coach is optimistic that one of them will distinguish themselves once the games begin.

Haener, a fourth-round draft selection in 2023, made appearances in eight games last season and has experience under his belt. He passed for 226 yards, with one touchdown and one interception during his brief time on the field. Rattler, a fifth-round pick in 2024, showed promise in seven games, completing 130 passes for 1,317 yards, along with four touchdown passes.

Shough, who was selected with the 40th pick in the 2025 draft, has the potential to quickly transition into a viable starter, a scenario Coach Moore has seen before. Reflecting on his own experience in Dallas, he recalled how Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick, excelled as a rookie after stepping in for an injured Tony Romo.
