Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell hospitalized after falling at a hotel
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was hospitalized on Wednesday after suffering a fall at a hotel in Washington D.C., according to a spokesman for the Republican leader.
The 79-year-old politician “had been experiencing some discomfort but nonetheless had been working from home in Kentucky” before coming to D.C. for Senate business this week, the spokesman said.
McConnell is being treated at a local hospital, and is said to be in good spirits.
The incident comes just days after McConnell’s Democratic counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, was involved in a car accident in New York City. Schumer reportedly was not injured in the accident.
It is unclear how long McConnell will be hospitalized, or what impact his absence will have on Senate business. The Senate is currently in the midst of contentious negotiations over a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package, and is also working to confirm President Biden’s nominees for various Cabinet positions.
