CULVER CITY, Calif. — Sony Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to the iconic romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” originally released in 1997. The studio has enlisted writer and director Celine Song, known for her work on “Materialists” and “Past Lives,” to craft the screenplay. While Song’s role will focus on writing, discussions about directing the project have yet to materialize.

The buzz surrounding the sequel was reignited recently when actor Dermot Mulroney, who starred alongside Julia Roberts in the first film, mentioned to the press that there was “talk of a sequel.” Mulroney, promoting his new Netflix series “The Hunting Wives,” stated, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.” His comments have sparked excitement and speculation among fans of the original film.

Celine Song’s latest project, “Materialists,” premiered in June and has received favorable reviews, grossing approximately $50 million globally. The film features a love triangle involving Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.
