Snowpocalypse Hits Upstate New York: Town Buried in 45 Inches of Snow

Syracuse, N.Y. – Over the holiday weekend, the North Country and Western New York experienced heavy bands of lake effect snow, leaving areas buried under significant snowfall. One town in particular received a staggering 45 inches of snow, with numerous counties reporting accumulations of over 30 inches.

In Lewis County, Barnes Corners emerged as the top snowfall spot in Upstate New York, with a whopping 45 inches blanketing the area. The National Weather Service forecasts additional snowfall for the region on Sunday, further exacerbating already challenging conditions.

Cities like Watertown and areas just south of Buffalo are expected to receive two to three feet of snow by Sunday night. Orchard Park, the location of the Buffalo Bills’ Sunday night football game, is projected to accumulate between 1 to 2 feet of snow before kickoff at 8:20 p.m.

Several counties declared states of emergency in response to the extreme weather conditions. Portions of the state Thruway in Western New York were temporarily closed due to the intense lake effect storm. While some areas have since reopened, a ban remains in effect for all commercial vehicles on I-90 in both directions spanning from exit 46 to the Pennsylvania state line.

With numerous counties grappling with significant snowfall totals, the region continues to navigate challenges posed by the winter storm. The impact of the severe weather conditions extends across various communities, prompting local authorities to take necessary precautions to ensure public safety amidst the snowfall.
