Social Security Fairness Act Accelerates Retroactive Payments for Millions — Check Your Eligibility Now!

Los Angeles, CA – The Social Security Fairness Act, passed by the outgoing Congress last year, marked a significant victory for over 3.2 million public sector workers, including firefighters, police officers, and teachers. This legislation repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which had previously reduced or eliminated Social Security benefits for certain workers who received pensions from non-covered employment.

The Social Security Administration recently announced that they have expedited the process of sending increased monthly payments and retroactive payments to beneficiaries affected by the law. Already, more than a third of those impacted have started receiving retroactive lump-sum payments for benefits that would have been due in 2024. As of March, the SSA has disbursed over $7.5 billion in retroactive payments to more than 1.1 million individuals, with an average retroactive payment of $6,710 per person.

Beneficiaries who have not yet received their retroactive payment are advised to wait until April before contacting the SSA. Additionally, those curious about the potential increase in their monthly payments are encouraged to hold off on inquiries until after they have received their April payment.

The SSA predicts that up to 3.2 million people could be impacted by the new law, with only a small number needing to inform the agency of their potential eligibility. These individuals include those who are uncertain if they ever applied for specific benefits affected by WEP or GPO. For those who have not applied, the SSA suggests filing an application online or by phone to explore their eligibility for increased benefits under the Fairness Act.

The Congressional Budget Office projects that the Social Security Fairness Act will raise monthly benefits by an average of $360 for those previously affected by WEP, and between $700 and $1,190 for individuals impacted by GPO. This increase in benefits aims to provide much-needed financial assistance to those who dedicated their careers to public service.

In light of these developments, the SSA is actively working to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive the full benefits they are entitled to under the Social Security Fairness Act. With the process streamlined and payments being expedited, more public sector workers can now enjoy the financial security they deserve in retirement.
