South Carolina man finds his wife with another man and shoots him when he tries to drive away

ANDERSON, SC – A South Carolina man is being held without bond after authorities say he fatally shot another man inside a vehicle parked outside his estranged wife’s apartment early this week.

Deputies with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office responded to an apartment complex on Palmetto Lane just after 4 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found 29-year-old Oscar David Barrios Mazariegos dead from multiple gunshot wounds in the driver’s seat of his car.

Investigators allege that 35-year-old Thomas J. Anderson discovered Mazariegos at his wife’s residence after arriving unexpectedly during the predawn hours. According to statements from law enforcement, Anderson’s wife and Mazariegos were in the apartment together when Anderson showed up.

Mazariegos attempted to flee the encounter by leaving the apartment and making his way to his vehicle, officials said. However, deputies say Anderson followed Mazariegos and then allegedly shot him multiple times before he could drive away.

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office confirmed Mazariegos died at the Palmetto Lane scene as a result of gunshot wounds. No one else was reported injured during the incident.

Authorities described the shooting as stemming from a domestic dispute. Anderson was taken into custody the same morning, about seven hours after deputies responded to the scene.

Detectives charged Anderson with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Anderson was transported to the Anderson County Detention Center, where he remains in custody.

A magistrate judge denied Anderson’s request for bond during a Friday court appearance. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not released details about any prior incidents between the individuals involved.

Neighbors in the typically quiet complex expressed shock at the violence, noting that law enforcement activity was highly unusual for the area.

No trial date has been announced as the case continues to develop.
