Stampede Tragedy: Nearly 100 Crushed to Death at Hindu Gathering in India, Officials Fear Toll May Rise

Hathras, Uttar Pradesh – A tragedy unfolded in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, as nearly 100 individuals tragically lost their lives at a Hindu religious gathering. The incident occurred during a sermon by a religious leader, Bhole Baba, leading to a chaotic stampede that resulted in numerous injuries as well.

According to Chaitra V, the divisional commissioner of the neighboring Aligarh district, 97 deaths have been confirmed, with fears that the toll could climb even higher. Most of the victims were women, as reported by state chief medical officer Umesh Kumar Tripathi. Many of the injured have been rushed to local hospitals for treatment.

The stampede took place as participants hurried to leave the event, blinded by a sudden dust storm that ensued. Videos circulating on social media showed bodies scattered outside a local hospital, highlighting the devastating aftermath of the incident.

Law enforcement officer Rajesh Singh mentioned that overcrowding was a possible factor in the tragedy, with initial reports indicating that the event hosted far more attendees than permitted. The chaos and panic that ensued as people rushed to exit led to the unfortunate loss of lives and injuries.

Mourning individuals gathered outside mortuaries, seeking information about their loved ones who were victims of the stampede. Survivors shared harrowing accounts of the rapid escalation of the tragedy, recounting the panic and helplessness that engulfed the venue as the event came to a close.

State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has initiated an investigation into the incident, emphasizing the importance of relief and rescue operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences and announced compensation for the families of the deceased and injured, acknowledging the severity of the “tragic incident.”

Unfortunately, deadly accidents like this are not uncommon at religious gatherings in India, where large crowds often converge in confined spaces with minimal safety measures in place. The stampede in Hathras serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with mass gatherings during religious events.
