KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Court documents released on Tuesday revealed that the gun used in last week’s shooting at Union Station was stolen. Authorities charged Lyndell Mays of Raytown, Missouri, and Dominic Miller of Kansas City with murder in connection to the shooting. The probable cause for Mays’ charges revealed that he admitted to pulling out his gun first and firing at others. Mays, who was among those wounded in the shooting, fell after being shot, and authorities found a gun in blood at the location. A live round was in the chamber of the gun, which was revealed to be stolen out of Kansas City, Missouri.
According to police affidavits, the argument that led to the shooting began when two groups of people grew agitated over the belief that members of the other group were staring at them. Surveillance video showed Mays and someone with him aggressively approached the other group. The video indicated that Mays was the first to begin shooting despite being surrounded by crowds of people, including children. Mays told detectives that he hesitated shooting because he knew there were kids there, but he began firing after someone in the other group threatened him. He said he chose a random person from the other group to shoot at as that person was running away.
The revelation of the stolen gun adds another layer to the tragedy at Union Station, raising questions about how the weapon was obtained and whether more stringent measures could have prevented the shooting. The arrest and charges of Mays and Miller shed light on the escalating tensions that led to the violent altercation. The impact of the shooting on the community has been profound, sparking conversations about the need for conflict resolution and gun control. As the case unfolds, the city is left grappling with the aftermath and seeking justice for the victims.
