Security guards detained the accused attacker while community members and police aided the 23-year-old victim in Portland’s Old Town.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Bystanders were already caring for a 23-year-old woman when Portland police reached the scene of an early-morning stabbing in Old Town, beginning a rapid response that authorities said helped move the injured woman toward lifesaving hospital care while security guards held the suspected attacker nearby.

The stabbing was reported at about 1:45 a.m. June 21 in the 400 block of Northwest Sixth Avenue. Portland Police Bureau officers assigned to Central Precinct found the wounded woman surrounded by people trying to help her. Officers provided more medical care until an ambulance took her to a hospital, where police said she was expected to survive. The victim was later identified in news reports and a family fundraiser as Kayla Harrell. Her family said she underwent multiple surgeries and was in stable condition, though she faced what the fundraiser described as an extended recovery.

The people who remained at the scene played several different roles in the immediate aftermath, according to the accounts released publicly. Bystanders tended to Harrell before officers arrived. Security guards detained a woman whom police identified as 36-year-old Achillia A. Palmer. Officers then took Palmer into custody and transported her to the Multnomah County Detention Center. The Police Bureau said she was lodged on allegations of attempted murder, second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, along with outstanding warrants. The charges are accusations, and no conviction in the case has been reported.

Investigators with the bureau’s Major Crimes Unit responded because of the seriousness of the attack. Police said detectives determined that Palmer and Harrell did not know each other and described the stabbing as unprovoked. Authorities have not announced a motive or explained what may have happened before the brief encounter. Police also have not publicly described the evidence detectives collected, identified the security guards who intervened or said how long they held Palmer before officers arrived. Harrell had gone out to celebrate her best friend’s birthday, according to reporting based on an interview with her cousin. The group had been spending the night in Portland when Harrell went outside. Her cousin, Daniel Harrell, said a woman approached and shouted an insult before the attack. He said Kayla Harrell first believed she had been punched because the encounter unfolded so quickly. Only afterward did she understand that she had suffered a stab wound to her chest. Police have not released a full public account from Harrell or said whether detectives have interviewed everyone who witnessed the confrontation.

The description from Harrell’s family added a personal timeline to the shorter official police statement. The family said the attack interrupted what had been an ordinary birthday celebration and led to emergency surgery, hospitalization and time away from work. A fundraiser organized by Daniel Harrell on behalf of McKayla Harrell, who is identified there as the beneficiary, said the money would help cover hospital costs and other expenses during her recovery. The fundraiser did not provide a detailed medical diagnosis, and authorities have not released information about the specific operations she underwent.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day credited the people who helped Harrell and the officers and detectives who responded. He said attacks described as unprovoked are uncommon in the community and expressed relief that Harrell was expected to recover. Day’s statement placed particular attention on the actions taken after the stabbing: community members stayed with the victim, security personnel prevented the suspect from leaving, officers provided care and detectives began investigating. The chief did not offer broader crime statistics or suggest that investigators had identified a reason for the attack.

The response also limited two immediate risks that often complicate a violent-crime scene. Harrell was not left alone while emergency personnel traveled to Northwest Sixth Avenue, and the suspected attacker was still present when officers arrived.
