Texas man gives young couple a place to stay then they drug his drink and stab and rob him

GARLAND, TX – A Texas couple has been charged with capital murder after allegedly killing a man who had taken them into his home. Authorities detained Haley Barber and Leo Moore, both 20, following the death of 53-year-old Johnny Mac Ross Jr., whom they are accused of stabbing and robbing in his own condominium.

The Garland Police Department reported receiving a call around 1 a.m. on November 11 about a deceased man at a residence on Chaha Road, east of Dallas. When officers arrived, they found Ross dead from multiple knife wounds, indicating a violent altercation had occurred.

During their investigation, officers noticed that Ross’s 2001 Mercedes was missing. Hours later, police spotted the stolen vehicle on Miller Road. A brief pursuit ensued, ending with Barber and Moore’s capture after they attempted to flee on foot.

Authorities confirmed that Barber and Moore had connections to Ross and were implicated in his death. A deeper probe into the events revealed disturbing details through a probable cause affidavit.

According to police documents, Barber attempted to sell Ross’s car, falsely claiming it belonged to her grandfather. When a prospect visited Ross’s condo for a spare key, a foul smell aroused suspicion. Barber allegedly showed the visitor Ross’s wrapped body in a back room, later admitting to drugging and stabbing him with Moore’s assistance. The visitor reported this to the police, who confirmed the grisly scene.

Inside, investigators discovered a Bowie knife, blood-covered furniture, and items stained with blood hidden in a closet. Ross’s remains were wrapped in household materials, a stark confirmation of his violent death.

Evidence from a neighbor’s camera captured Barber and Moore entering and leaving Ross’s condo several times around the suspected time of the murder. This footage aligns with statements indicating the duo left an injured Ross for hours before Barber allegedly told Moore to end his life to prevent further suffering.

During police interviews, Barber confessed to planning the theft of Ross’s assets, while Moore admitted to stabbing Ross, first in his sleep and later fatally upon their return.

Barber and Moore are held on $1 million bonds each at the Dallas County Jail, charged with capital murder and evading arrest. Authorities continue to investigate the chilling case that has shocked the community.
