SAN ANTONIO, TX – A man faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly attempting to run over a former police officer outside a courthouse. The officer, James Brennand, was attending a hearing related to his own legal troubles stemming from a controversial shooting incident.
The altercation took place on March 26 when James Michael Cox, 58, reportedly approached Brennand in the courthouse parking lot. Cox, identifying himself, allegedly confronted Brennand before driving away. Despite the unsettling encounter, police have not provided any insight into Cox’s motives for the alleged attack.
The target of the incident, Brennand, is embroiled in a case involving the shooting of a teenager. The former officer was terminated from his role after he shot Erik Cantu, then 17, in 2022 during what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop.
Brennand claimed the teen’s car had evaded him earlier due to a mismatched license plate, but a different perspective unfolded through body camera footage.
The video reportedly depicts an agitated Brennand ordering Cantu out of his car. When Cantu attempted to reverse the vehicle, Brennand, standing by the open driver-side door, is seen reaching into the car and then firing his weapon.
As Brennand navigates his legal battle, Cox finds himself facing charges of evading arrest and resisting arrest in Medina County, in addition to the Bexar County assault charge. Cox’s legal troubles escalated after a warrant was issued on April 1.
The implications of the March confrontation add another layer of complexity to Brennand’s ongoing case. A status conference for Brennand is scheduled for May 30, potentially shedding more light on both incidents and clarifying the repercussions for those involved.
The Brennand case remains a point of significant public interest, reflecting broader discussions about law enforcement practices and accountability.
