Tiger Woods’ first competitive round since the Open Championship is off to a rocky start at the Genesis Invitational. After shooting a 69 in the opening round, Woods is in position to miss the cut, trailing the lead by 5 strokes.
Woods’ round at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California began with a double bogey on the par-4 second hole, followed by a bogey on the third. He managed to get back on track, however, with birdies on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes.
The 15-time major champion finished the front nine with a birdie on the ninth hole, but his struggles continued on the back nine. After a bogey on the 10th, Woods made a clutch birdie on the par-4 17th hole to get back to even par.
Despite his late rally, Woods is still 5 strokes behind the lead heading into the second round. With the cut line expected to be around even par, Woods will need to make a big push in Round 2 to make the weekend.
