Bibb County, Alabama, is reeling after authorities rescued at least 10 children from a disturbing sex trafficking operation involving an underground bunker. The investigation, which unfolded over several months, revealed horrific abuse perpetrated against vulnerable youth, some as young as three years old.

Law enforcement began their inquiry in early February, culminating in the discovery of the bunker in Brent, just an hour from Birmingham. The children were reportedly drugged and transported to this grim location, where they endured unspeakable acts. Sheriff Jody Wade stated that the traffickers could have profited as much as $1,000 per night from their crimes.

“The things we found are some of the most horrific I’ve ever seen,” Wade said during a press conference. He emphasized that the children were not kept in the bunker indefinitely, as the duration of their captivity varied based on the traffickers’ operations. The sheriff lamented the profound violation of innocence that these children faced, calling it a crime against humanity.

Authorities believe the abuse dates back to 2022 and may be linked to the Sureños gang, which is often associated with child trafficking. Wade underscored the gravity of the situation, declaring, “No child deserves this. The power and control exerted over these victims is a violation of their very essence.”

The bunker itself, described as a partially underground storm shelter, was devoid of any semblance of safety or care. Inside, investigators found a filthy mattress, a few chairs, and a small chest of drawers, underscoring the squalid conditions in which the children were held. Reports indicated that some victims were restrained during their time in the bunker, subjected to systematic abuse by multiple offenders.

Seven individuals have been arrested in connection with this case, facing charges that include rape, human trafficking, and kidnapping, among others. The suspects are currently being detained at the Bibb County Jail. Under Alabama state law, those convicted of offenses against children aged six or younger face severe penalties, including life sentences without the possibility of parole.

As the investigation continues, officials anticipate further arrests and hope to uncover more victims who may still be at risk.
