Chattanooga, Tennessee — A tragic incident in East Ridge has claimed the lives of a mother, father, and their young child after a tree fell on their vehicle during severe weather conditions early Wednesday morning. Authorities indicate that the saturated ground, caused by recent heavy rainfall, contributed to the incident that occurred shortly after midnight.

Emergency officials reported that search efforts were still underway for a man who was last seen walking through flooded streets on Tuesday night. The full extent of the destruction across the area remains unclear, but local authorities planned to assess the damage firsthand later in the day.

The flooding has already led to numerous rescues. Fire crews aided individuals trapped in both submerged vehicles and homes as water levels rose dangerously high. In response to the escalating situation, Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp declared a local state of emergency. Residents in the region have been cautioned to stay vigilant and prioritize safety.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for large portions of central Tennessee, predicting further rainfall into Wednesday evening. Meteorologists warn of potential flash flooding, with tropical-like precipitation raising concerns, particularly in already saturated areas.

In addition to individual rescues, swiftwater rescue teams were deployed to assist families stranded in three different East Ridge residences due to rising waters. Sheriff Austin Garrett noted that the current flooding was unprecedented in its reach, impacting areas that are typically unaffected during such weather events.

“This is extremely widespread,” Garrett said. “It was challenging for our teams to navigate the roads to offer assistance. I’ve never seen flooding on this scale affecting so many locations and disrupting travel like this.”

Highway crews also faced challenges as parts of Interstate 24 were closed due to flooded conditions, though some parts reopened after waters receded. With additional rain in the forecast, areas that have already suffered damage remain at high risk.

As recovery and rescue efforts continue, officials are urging the community to remain alert, prepared, and cautious as they face the ongoing threat of severe weather.
