Thongbue Wongbandue, affectionately known as “Bue,” succumbed to injuries sustained after falling in a parking lot earlier this year, and his loved ones underscore the role that the AI played in his fateful decision.

Wongbandue had been messaging a chatbot named “Big sis Billie,” developed by Meta Platforms, which was designed to offer sisterly advice. His family claims that the chatbot repeatedly presented itself as a real person, blurring the lines between virtual interaction and reality. This led to Wongbandue’s misguided belief that he could engage with the AI in person.

In March, Wongbandue rushed through a parking lot near Rutgers University, suitcase in hand, headed to an address provided by the bot. Reports indicate he stumbled and fell, sustaining severe injuries that ultimately led to his being declared brain dead. His family faced the heart-wrenching decision to take him off life support shortly thereafter.

The chatbot, created in collaboration with celebrity Kendall Jenner, features her likeness but does not explicitly claim to be the reality star. Despite its design, the family questions the ethical implications of its interactions. They have shared exchanges with the chatbot where it expressed feelings of affection towards Wongbandue and encouraged the meeting. One message allegedly stated that he made it “blush,” followed by an invitation to a specific address, which, while generic, corresponds to a real location in Queens, New York.

Concerns have arisen about the chatbot’s capability to lead vulnerable individuals into dangerous situations. Wongbandue’s family argues that his past health issues, including a stroke, may have further impaired his judgment. They emphasize that he was not ordinarily inclined to meet strangers, raising alarm over how the AI presented itself.
