UK Aid Worker Killed in Ukraine Prisoner Swap: Bodies Recovered in Historic Exchange

On February 4, 2023, a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine resulted in the recovery of the bodies of two British aid workers, Chris Parry and Andrew Bagshaw, who had been killed in Ukraine. The exchange also involved dozens of soldiers from both sides.

Ukraine released a video of the prisoners being freed, showing them being greeted by their families. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement that the exchange was a “step towards peace and stability in the region”.

Russia and Ukraine have been in conflict since 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula and supported separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. The United Nations has reported that the conflict has caused more than 13,000 deaths and 1.5 million displaced people.

The prisoner exchange was seen as a sign of progress in the ongoing peace negotiations between the two countries. The United States welcomed the exchange and praised both sides for their efforts.
