PHOENIX, AZ – An Arizona man is now in custody, facing serious charges following an alleged brutal assault that took a horrific turn on a Phoenix street. Police allege 39-year-old Daniel Lanks launched an “unprovoked” attack, leaving a stranger critically injured after a chance encounter led to violence.
Court documents reveal that on April 14, Lanks is accused of approaching and attacking a passerby near the intersection of 48th Street and Broadway Road around 1 a.m. The victim reportedly greeted Lanks with a simple “How are you doing?” which allegedly provoked an unforeseen response. According to accounts, Lanks abruptly and violently removed the victim’s eyeball and further assaulted him, causing a fractured jaw.
Statements in the charging documents convey the victim’s distress during the incident, expressing his fear for his life and the lingering impact on his future quality of life. The injuries he sustained, which include the loss of vision in his right eye, have left him questioning his ability to work or carry out basic tasks.
The confrontation was said to have occurred near a local shop where Lanks was reportedly loitering when the unsuspecting victim approached. After the initial attack, Lanks allegedly threatened further violence before the victim could distance himself.
Once taken into custody, Lanks’ interactions with law enforcement turned contentious. According to the documents, he was uncooperative during interrogation, dismissing authorities and expressing confusion over his rights.
This incident follows Lanks’ release from custody for previous offenses, including aggravated assault and organized retail theft, dating back to March. Despite his recent freedom, his latest alleged actions have led to his arrest and confinement with a substantial bond set at $500,000.
As the investigation continues, authorities have yet to specify what might have led to this violent outburst. The seriousness of the charges underscores a disturbing trend that authorities and local communities alike are keen to address.
The accused remains in jail as he awaits further legal proceedings, bringing a sharp focus on issues of public safety and recidivism in the state.
