A new report from the US Department of Energy (DOE) has found that the Covid-19 virus likely leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China.
This assessment is reportedly a minority view within the US intelligence community, according to sources who spoke with CNN.
The DOE report has been met with criticism from Republicans, who have called for answers as to how the virus originated.
Bloomberg has reported that the DOE report has a key caveat, noting that while there is evidence that the virus was present in the lab, it is unclear if it was being studied or if the virus was accidentally released.
CBS New York has reported that the lab in question is the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which has denied any involvement in the virus’ origin.
While the origin of the virus is still up for debate, the report from the DOE has added new fuel to the lab leak theory.
